The European Summer School on Information Science (ESSIS) is an intensive one week teaching event for BA students students other than information science who want to enrol in a MA program in information science. The lectures in core areas of information science will enable students to close their knowledge gaps and to prepare better for a relevant MA program. You will meet students and professors from other countries and other schools of information science. Enjoy networking and studying with many other students.
The courses of ESSIS will cover the four following areas:
• Introduction to Information Science
• Research Methodology in Information Science
• Information Seeking and Retrieval
• Evaluation of Information Services
There will be interactive lectures. Furthermore, students will work on group assignments.
The social program will allow you to experience the historical old city of Graz. In addition, we will visit Admont Abbey library, the largest library of its kind, and the Gesäuse National Park with its unique and picturesque rocky mountains. Several student grants are available for students who want to participate in ESSIS. Most grant recipients are nominated by the partner universities involved in the EINFOSE project (sokrat.ffos.hr/einfose):
- University of Osijek,
- University of Boras,
- University of Graz,
- University of Hildesheim,
- Hacettepe University Ankara,
- University of Barcelona,
- University of Pisa and
- University of Ljubljana.
Selected students will receive the costs for room and full board in "Bildungshaus Mariatrost" (5 nights) plus travel support of up to 275 € based on real expenses.
Registration fees for nominated students, which are 90 € including room and board during the entire Summer School, will be covered by the nominating institution. Other students can register for a price of 400 € and are admitted if space is available.
Location BH Mariatrost
All participants will stay in single or double rooms just below the historical Basilica of Mariatrost. All meals will be served at the premises and all classes will take place there. Rooms are reserved for participants from Sunday until Friday.
You can travel to Graz either by plane, long distance buses or trains.
Arriving by plane:
If you arrive by plane (airport: Graz Thalerhof), you can either take a taxi or use public transport.
The taxi ride from the airport to Bildungshaus Mariatrost takes about 35 minutes and you pay around € 35,- (price may vary).
The bus stop (Graz Airport) is located directly in front of the passenger building, in the immediate vicinity of the departure area. If you travel by public transport, you have to buy a ticket on the bus (1-hour-ticket). This ticket costs € 2,40 and can only be purchased in cash directly from the bus driver.
To get to the Bildungshaus Mariatrost, take the bus 630 or 631 in the direction of "Graz Jakominiplatz" and get off at the final stop "Jakominiplatz". There you have to take the tram line 1 in direction "Hilmteich/Botanischer Garten". At the station "Hilmteich/Botanischer Garten" take the bus E1 in direction "Mariatrost" and get off at the last stop "Mariatrost". Now you are only a short walk away (about 8 minutes) from the Bildungshaus Mariatrost.
Arriving by train:
If you arrive by train (Hauptbahnhof/central railway station Graz), you can either take a taxi or use public transport.
The taxi ride from the central station to Bildungshaus Mariatrost takes about 22 minutes and you pay around € 18,- (price may vary).
The bus stop (Hauptbahnhof/central railway station Graz) is located directly in front of the central station building. If you travel by public transport, you have to buy a ticket on the bus (1-hour-ticket). This ticket costs € 2,40 and can only be purchased in cash directly from the bus driver. To get to the Bildungshaus Mariatrost, take the bus 58 in the direction of "Ragnitz" and get off at the stop "Schönbrunngasse".
At this stop you have to change to the bus E1 in direction “Mariatrost “ and get off at the last stop "Mariatrost". Now you are only a short walk away (about 8 minutes) from the Bildungshaus Mariatrost.
